On the morning of July 7, 1999, Eco-Photo Explorers assisted the "Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor" in documenting and deploying a sophisticated underwater environmental probe. This probe will be gathering vital data on the health and water quality of the harbor.

Program Description

The Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor's Water Monitoring Program was developed to get the public actively involved in monitoring harbor conditions and reporting suspected sewage discharges and other violations. Its purpose is to educate the public about issues affecting the harbor and Long Island Sound. They have established collaborative relationships with state and local public officials and environmental agencies. The coalition also participates in the International Coastal Cleanup, is working to map Long Island Sound Monitoring stations, and has published an environmental guidebook to Hempstead Harbor. They monitor three stations weekly from May through November.

Dr. John Waldman, a Reseach Associate for the Hudson River Foundation and Carol DiPaolo edited the book "Hempstead Harbor: Its History, Ecology and Environmental Challenges." It was published in 1998 by the Coalition to Save Hempstead Harbor.
