- Queen
Anne's Revenge, Blackbeard's Flagship (QAR
Shipwreck Project)
The North Carolina Underwater Archaeology Unit has historically documented over 5,000 shipwrecks lost in state waters. These sites range from 4,000-year-old dugout canoes, to colonial ferries, Civil War steamers, and ships from the World War II era. None of these underwater archaeological sites, however, has had more impact than the shipwreck discovered near Beaufort Inlet by Intersal, Inc. in 1996. This Florida-based research, survey, and recovery group--working under the auspices of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources--located an early-eighteenth-century shipwreck believed to be the remains of Blackbeard's flagship Queen Anne's Revenge.

Dive Down Program
The North Carolina Underwater Archaeology Branch in partnership with Carteret County dive operations and tourism businesses offers recreational divers with a unique, exciting, and enjoyable diving experience, the aim of the Dive Down program is to convey the historical, archaeological, geological, and ecological importance of the Queen Anne's Revenge shipwreck site to encourage its future preservation and study, and to advocate for the appreciation of North Carolina's submerged cultural resources by encouraging divers to use this multidisciplinary approach for their own individual wreck diving experiences.
Upon completion of the "Dive Down" program, recreational divers will earn a PADI "Heritage Awareness" Specialty Certification and make a dive on the actual recovery site to view a piece of pirate history.

Annual Vintage Dive Rally
The Northeast Diving Equipment Group (NEDEG) and other vintage dive enthusiasts give divers the opportunity to try out vintage dive equipment from as far back as the 1940’s. Hard hat equipment from the U.S. (the famous Mark V), Russia, China and Korea are among some of the vintage equipment that might be available. Other items include surface supplied dive equipment, double hose regulators, horse collar BCD’s and much more.
Are you looking for a truly unique diving experience?
Contact the Northeast Diving Equipment Group to find out when they will be holding their next annual Vintage Diving Equipment Rally. They will have all kinds of vintage diving equipment on display. Any certified scuba diver who would like to suit up in an antique hard-hat rig must take a 15 minute orientation class and pay a small donation to NEDEG in order to take part in this once in a lifetime diving opportunity. Please note, all diving is under the direct supervision of multiple surface support personnel and two underwater safety divers.
